Where to Stay in New York

New York is one of those places I’ve wanted to visit for as long as I can remember – I’ve watched far too many movies probably but it’s somewhere that sounds magical!

We were due to visit 2 years ago for a few days before moving on to our favourite place in Mexico (Excellence Playa Mujeres) but unfortunately it was part of the holiday I talk about in The Day My Life Changed Forever.. however fast forward and we’re ready to finally go next year – I can’t wait!!

I recently asked all of you lovely lot for recommendations on where to stay in New York and ended up with SO many strong recommendations! Subsequently, lots of you then asked for the list of them so here they all are 🙂

  1. NYC is my most favourite city in the world & we discover something new on each returning visit – we have stayed at The Edison, Mariott Marquis on Times Square, The Westin, The Wellington & the Hilton Midtown (i would recommend all the hotels but we were most impressed by the location of the Hilton).
Sightseeing wise – Top Of The Rock (during the day), Empire State Building (at night), ice skating at the Wollerman Rink central park, bike ride around Central Park, St Patricks Cathedral on 5th Avenue, Statue of Liberty, 9/11 memorial museum, One World Trade Centre, harbour cruise (done both day & night cruises), hop on / hop off buses (perfect loop of the city for resting your feet!), Madison Square Garden All Access Tour & a sporting event if available (we have seen both ice hockey & basketball games); visit Brooklyn – take a ride on Janes Carousel & walk back over to Manhattan on the Brooklyn Bridge. My daughter & I always take in a Broadway show but we buy our tickets in the UK in advance (yes you might save a bit of cash by queing at TCKTS in Times Square but to us time is much more precious). If you are a Sex In The City fan then visit 66 Perry Street in the West Village to take a photo ourside Carrie’s apartment!
Food wise El Centro Mexican in Hells Kitchen is amazing, Carmines for Italian / American family food, Ellens Stardust Diner for breakfast is a must, can recommend Gramercy Tavern too.
Be sure to visit the revolving bar in the Marriott Marquis on Times Square & have cocktails over looking the city & also 230 FIFTH rooftop bar & restaurant is also worth a visit.

  2. We stayed in Warwick New York hotel, it was a stunning hotel (Elvis used to stay there 😁) and excellent location!! When we went we got a New York City pass from attraction tickets direct. We also downloaded an app to help use the subway to get about – sooo handy!! We went to see Matilda on broadway, top of the rock, Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty and Ellis island cruise, 9/11 museum, and general sight seeing like Brooklyn bridge and Times Square! Have fun! So jealous 😫🇺🇸

    1. Oh and a cycle tour around Central Park, quite expensive but nice to be cycled around to see all the important bits as it’s massive you couldn’t walk around it and see it all!

  3. I’d also try the Shelburne on Lexington Avenue. We stayed there in Feb and it was really reasonable, with pretty big rooms and we walked everywhere in midtown and Central Park 😊

    1. I stayed there last year, was really lovely. Huge room and we even had a balcony with a view of ESB. Great hotel staff too. X

  4. Hi Mrs R, going to New York in 2 weeks, staying at the Edison Hotel in Times Square. It’s a Art Deco hotel looks lovely, can’t wait. Last time there stayed at the Roosevelt Hotel Madison Ave, talk about fancy, it was soo classy, can’t wait to go back, best place in the world x

  5. I’m going at Christmas time I’m staying at Westin so I’ll give u some feed bak when we’re bak we go 22 nd 31st dec can’t wait soo excited 😁

  6. Without doubt you have to do Top of the Rock – amazing views and chance to get stunning photos! Also Ellen’s Stardust Diner is just bizarre & brilliant!!

  7. As long as the hotel is clean and in a great location that’s all you need, don’t overthink it too much, Times Square or Central Park are a good base to stay for your first time. New York offers so much, that hopefully you won’t be seeing your hotel room for long. Get up, get out and stay out, after all it is the city that never sleeps. X

  8. Have been several times and best hotel we’ve stayed in is Renaissance Times Square. Even if you decide on another hotel I would recommend visiting their hotel bar as you will not find a better spot to have a drink and people watch from.
I would always recommend close to or on Times Square for your first time… there is no where like it in the world ❤️
Also check out 230 Fifth Rooftop Bar 🌃
    Happy planning! X

  9. Hey Mrs Rackley, Love your blog! The Riu Plaza right on Times Square is fab! Only got built 1 year ago so very modern and very clean. Been to NYC a few times and this is the best hotel I’ve found. I know you’ve already got a huge list but you really should check it out xx
